HBO Presents How To Make It In America

Posted in Comedy, Television by gregston on February 8, 2010

This show right here exudes New York City. Just watch and you’ll see what I mean.

“HBO put up the pilot episode of Kid Cudi’s new comedy series on Youtube (for US Residents only.) Spotted at Dat New Cudi.”

This slipped by me. I can only assume it came out around the time of the album (because I’m too lazy/busy/stupid right now to do the research). I feel like my internet game is slackin. I need to go back in time and step it up. The Mouse and the Mask still gets plays on the iPod. DOOM and Danger Mouse were probably the only people capable of crafting an album as insane as Adult Swim itself.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force is my favorite show of all time, besides The Wire (which I consider more of a long movie anyway). Just thought I’d share a little something about myself. I also enjoy ripe cherries.

Top 10 Television Title Sequences

Posted in Television by Nicolas Heller on September 1, 2009

While fast-forwarding through the  opening title sequence of Entourage last night, I began wondering: Why do good shows produce such lousy intros? I find myself muting, skipping or changing the channel for 75 percent of most television shows. I feel like those 20 to 60 seconds is the most important part for the program (especially for antsy first time viewers), so why not spend a lot of time making it the best? Good intros get me amped and ready for what I am about to watch. Shouldn’t this motivation be the producer’s number one goal? That said, there are a handful of opening sequences that do it right. In no particular order, here are 10 intros that work for me.

Kenan and Kel

To understand just how time specific this opening is, take a minute and try to imagine a Nickelodeon show from today featuring Coolio rapping the intro… Doesn’t quite work, does it? Can’t really picture this man alongside this girl. It’s a shame too, I wish all opening titles featured one of his tunes.

Eric Wareheim

Posted in Comedy, Film, Music, Television by Nicolas Heller on August 22, 2009

I have been a huge fan of Cartoon Network’s Tim and Eric: Awesome Show Great Job for about a year now, but was completley unaware of Eric’s music video directing career until recently. His resumee consists of a wide variety of artists from Major Lazer, to Maroon 5, to MGMT,  and as you could imagine the videos have same ridiculous, random, and uncomfortable feel as the show. Wareheim’s unique style and consistent animation helps qualify him as one of my favorite music video director’s at the moment. I would love to be on one of his sets as he tries to direct what clearly seem to be random people he found at a soup kitchen.

This season has been absolutely incredible… With only 2 more episodes of this steadily peaking season, I thought I would share a really interesting video on the making of the main titles.  You know, the crazy ass credit sequence that usually kicks in after the first beat in the episode, during your “OH SHIT” moment. It gets you right in the mood for the show, and it uses a perfect song… Bad Things by Jace Everett. I love how these guys shot it all on location and filmed in all different formats. Check Check-It:

Rise of the Radio Show

Posted in Comedy, Television by Nicolas Heller on August 19, 2009

This summer, I worked at RSA films alongside writer/director/producer of a new webseries called Rise of the Radio Show. The hilariously clever show is shot on practically no budget at Comical Radio, the station where creator and lead actor Danny Lobell has his own program in real life. Make sure to watch the series in its entirety and look out for hilarious cameo’s from comedians, JB Smoove, Brian Posehn, Kyle Grooms, Dave Attel, Patrice O’neil and many more.

My favorite episode, Integration.
