Photos from Apocalpyto – Mel Gibson, 2006. I’m going to sidestep a discussion of Mel Gibson’s personal beliefs (he’s not exactly Leni Riefenstahl anyway). The man knows how to make a good action movie, and Apocalypto is a great action movie. The film’s second half is a visceral, breathless chase through the Mayan jungle. There’s not much in the way of depth or originality, but the Mayan civilization is rendered in remarkable detail, giving even the non-action sequences a vibrancy not often seen in so-called popcorn flicks. Recommended for those seeking a little more than G.I. Joe.
