The other day while checking twitter I came across the above tweet by a friend of mine by the name of Rae. It seems she’d had it with MIA and anyone who proclaimed that MIA was: 1. good & 2. a rapper. Being the fan that I am I rushed to defend her the best that I could and the following debate ensued. For those unfamiliar with twitter after reading this paragraph it would be best to scroll to the bottom of this post and read from the bottom up to follow along with the timeline of the discussion. Comments are welcome and encouraged, however if they are obnoxious or hateful in anyway they will be removed…why waste the brainpower anyway. Read on and engage in what I felt was a great discussion:

The problem seems to be that RaeSanni is allowing a definition to get in the way of enjoying music. Why does it matter if M.I.A. is a rapper or not? Why does it bother her? Just enjoy the music or come at it with an informed critical perspective, but don’t say you don’t like it because she’s not a rapper and people say she is. That just seems childish (for the record, I think there are some interesting points made on both sides, but ultimately the argument is a matter of semantics).
